Sampling Data

The Utah Division of Water Quality (DWQ) samples water for levels of E. coli.  All surface waters contain some E. coli whether or not they have been monitored or an advisory has been issued.  DWQ, in coordination with the Utah E. coli Workgroup, has focused monitoring efforts on highly recreated water bodies currently protected for direct and indirect human contact.  The result values are screened to make sure E. coli counts are below a certain threshold to protect for human health.  There are different thresholds for water bodies protected for direct contact, named 2A water bodies, and water bodies protected for indirect contact, named 2B water bodies.  Additionally, DWQ routinely monitors for E. coli in rivers and streams sampled around the State.  All current and archived E. coli data are stored on this page.

For more information about the sampled water bodies, screening values and what the result numbers mean, please visit the Home link above.

Current Sampling Data

Lakes and Reservoirs

Currently, the following water bodies are being monitored for E. coli.  Three samples are collected at each site on a regular basis.

Water bodies designated as 2A are monitored to not exceed a one-time result of 409 most probable number of E. coli per 100mL of water sample (MPN).  If a result exceeds 409 MPN (screening value) at a location, the DWQ recommends to avoid swimming in that area.

Several 2B water bodies are also monitored to not exceed a one-time result of 668 most probable number of E. coli per 100mL of water sample (MPN).  These sites are not designated by the State of Utah as direct contact water bodies, but are still protected for indirect contact (ie. boating).  If a result exceeds 668 MPN at a 2B location, the DWQ recommends to avoid direct contact with the water in that area.

Since some of the 2B water bodies are more highly recreated than others the State of Utah has decided to use the 2A screening value (409 MPN) which is more protective of human health.  These water bodies are listed in the table below but have been identified with an *.

Results are updated frequently.  All results collected so far at each water body have been stored in a PDF file in the "Compiled Data" column.  Navigate sampling locations alphabetically, or scroll through the table below.

Rivers and Streams

Currently, the following rivers and streams are being monitored for E. coli.

These data are collected and used in Total Daily Maximum Load analyses and 303 (d) impairment listings, or de-listings.  All result values collected will be stored in a PDF file in the "Compiled Data" column.  More sites that are not impaired but currently sampled for E. coli as part of other projects and programs, will be added as the data are compiled.
